New Year's post

Ok I really tried to write an appropriate New Year's Eve post and it just was not working out. Everything I typed was .... well never mind. So instead, I looked up some funny New Year's quotes to share with you. I saw the first one on my cousin's facebook page and it made me laugh. I'll let you all decide for yourself which one is me!

  • “An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.” Bill Vaughn

  • "New Year's Day… now is the accepted time to make your regular annual good resolutions. Next week you can begin paving hell with them as usual." Mark Twain
  • "New Year's Resolution: To tolerate fools more gladly, provided this does not encourage them to take up more of my time." ~James Agate
  • "Never tell your resolution beforehand, or it's twice as onerous a duty." ~John Selden
Perhaps my New Year's Resolution should be to stop being so cynical?. Just kidding- normally I am all for making resolutions- I think they can be healthy if the person making them is truly taking an honest look at themselves. However, at this very moment in time, I have no desire to do this for myself. It's too much work and I've promised myself that I don't have to think about anything til Jan 14th ;)

Hope that gave you a laugh! Happy New Year!

Thoughts, wonderings, happenings, and hopes

I had orientation at the hospital today. First part was very interesting, second part kinda boring but obviously necessary, third part so boring I almost fell asleep at the table. I am pretty much sure (barring any horribly unpleasant problems while actually working my clinicals) that I want to work for this healthcare system associated with my nursing program. The emphasis is so strongly on providing the patient with not only the best healthcare but also on excellence in personal service to the patient and the families. I realize as an untried student it is very easy to say that I feel drawn to the personal aspect of nursing, but I do feel that way- at least for right now! I have experienced nursing care both for myself and for loved ones that has been good, bad, ugly, and incredibly excellent. I know the difference firsthand that having a caring, compassionate nurse can make. And in a nutshell, the desire to provide that to my patients is the reason (along with a deep interest in women's care during and after pregnancy) that I am going into healthcare. So back to orientation tomorrow I go! Then it's time off til the 14th of January when I commence the learning- with a long day of CPR training. I have more orientation with the school the week after that and the week after that I start clinicals on Monday morning - bright and early! It is all getting very REAL very quickly! I'm excited and maybe not so excited at the same time. Excited to get started, to learn, to see if it's anything like what I hope it is, to be a part of something bigger than my small world (I know some of you out there will roll your eyes at that one but its true so ssh it!).... not so excited about some of the changes that must come along with that. I've been with my baby pretty much 24/7 for 3 and a half years so being away from her all day will be a huge change that I am not loving. I am so thankful I have wonderful family that I can trust to care for her! And also... I'm not so crazy about that 6:30 start time twice a week ;)

Oh also, just as a humiliating side note.... I've been a housewife wearing pretty much jeans and t-shirts for the last 3.5 years- longer if you figure in maternity and the fact that the job I had before I had Anna was very informal. So when I went to look for something "business casual" to wear, all I had in my closet was an older pair of khakis cause I forgot that I had sold off all my clothes in a garage sale a while back. On go the khaki's this morning... and to my dismay.. I remember that these particular pants were ones that I only wore folded up into floodwater length in the summer because they are appalling short.... and they were literally all I had to wear. Fan-freaking-tastic. I looked ridiculous all day long. If it had been even half a degree warmer I would have rolled them up and gone with the flood length.

We had family in from TN after Christmas this year. I am so very glad they came this long way for just a short visit! I enjoy my family's company so much and Anna just adores her cousins beyond words. The same boys (minus one) that we visited this summer came here to see her and they played til they literally dropped. They explored every corner of my mom's house- jumped on mattresses, played ping pong, played babies, played slay the dragon (Alex), played with their handheld games (the boys taught Anna to play- btw Adam- we need to invest in one of those ASAP), and played at a local bouncy house. At one point, Alex (wonderful boy- I cannot believe how good and gentle he is with Anna) actually laid down in the bouncy house and pretended to be asleep just to get a moment's peace from two 3 yr old's jumping on him!I have some pictures I need to download tonight so once I get those on the computer I'll post them on here and facebook for anyone that wants them. I am hoping all the cousins can start getting together more often- we all live so far apart :( Thank heavens for facebook to allow us to stay in touch!

Anna is already asking what toys she is getting for next Christmas. She is convinced that she didn't get enough things for her dollhouse. :) Can you say spoiled? I will not btw be going to walmart next week and getting her more dollhouse accessories. No I will not. That would send entirely the wrong message. Which I would never do. Really. ok maybe a few- after all - it IS hard to play dollhouse correctly when you only have furniture for a few rooms! She is growing up so fast- everyday I discover something else she is able to do on her own. I am horribly behind on my babybook- I'll have to put that on my to do asap list.

After tomorrow, I have about a thousand things to get busy on around the house. My goal is to get it a lot o' stuff done before I go back to school. I am shamed to say I still have a few things left on the playroom- bad mommy. Don't worry- she didn't notice. Everything looks super cute though- I can't wait to get the rest done and get it organized.

Well, I suppose that is it for now. Stay tuned breathlessly for pictures!

Christmas 2009

This year has absolutely flown by- can't believe it. Anna had a fantastic Christmas- she is so excited about her toys. Tomorrow starts the massive clean up that has been started around here but not yet finished. I am almost done with the playroom- looks super cute if I say so myself! I have a few more things to finish up cause I just didn't get it all done like I had hoped. Then I gotta move the Christmas tree and get that room all organized! Then I guess I'll move right on to another room- this house is in BAD need of a makeover! Here's a few pictures from Anna's Christmas.

Proof I actually did learn this semester

The physiology of the human body is incredibly fascinating. I had absolutely NO idea how very little I knew until I started taking these classes. In fact, I actually thought I wouldn't learn that much! And instead my understanding of how the body works and how infinitely complex it is has grown by leaps and bounds. And there is still SO MUCH to learn. I hope a day will never come when I tire of learning, especially all things medical. Most of the things I learned are way too in depth to try and transmit it to this blog- and also I'm sure I'd bore everyone to tears! Just for fun though, here is a list of some interesting ... and short!...  facts that I learned this semester.

1. The brain contains 100 billion neurons (actual transmitting cells) and 10-50 trillion neuroglia (supportive nerve cells)

2. Some neurons are capable of transmitting signals at rates up to 280 mph

3. our sense of balance comes from crystals, gel, and hair cells in the semicircular canals in the inner ear. As our heads move, the crystals shift and stimulate the hair cells which then synapse with one of the cranial nerves which carries the signal to the brain.

4. the primitive heart begans beating on the 22nd day of gestation

5. It is actually possible to give yourself a heart attack while sitting on the toilet "taking care of business" - no one start worrying about taking a poo though :)

6. we have around 5 million red blood cells in one cubic millimeters of blood

7. blood starts clotting within 15 secs of an injury

8. one drop of blood makes a complete circulation through the body in one minute

9. when you add one pound of body fat, your body must make 200 new miles of blood vessels to supply the new fat

10. during fetal development, babies form 3 separate pairs of kidneys- the first two both deteriorate and the 3rd one becomes the kidney they are born with. The kidneys are not fully mature until 2-3 yrs of age. I'll spare you the lecture on how the kidneys work, but take my word for it- incredibly interesting.

11. after a baby is born and the umbilical cord is cut, the blood vessels from the cord to the babies organs, etc form connective tissue and ligaments that hold different organs/vessels together.

12. all babies have a hole in the heart called a foramen ovale, between the two atria for exchange of blood which closes naturally in most babies.

13. injured cells release chemicals that attract white blood cells to the area to begin the repair process

14. 60% of prescriptions are prescribed incorrectly leading to a $20 billion additional medical expense every year. Doctors prescribe 12 million antibiotic prescriptions/yr for upper respiratory tract infections- 90% of which are viral and cannot be treated with antibiotics.

15. There are 2 million cases of hospital acquired infections every year in the US. Most of these are caused by the introduction of microorganisms through medical treatment or procedures.

Those last two are actually quite depressing.... so sorry about that! I actually have a super disgusting one that I"ll gladly pass along but I won't post it on here cause my brother would never forgive me. So if you want the gross ones- you shoot me an email and I'll send you a few bonus gross facts! ha!

Getting to work!

And not just me either ;) - I've got everyone working on my projects with me! Now that I'm out of class, I have the brain power to turn to Christmas and finishing starting the playroom. I got all Anna's gifts wrapped last night. Did that while watching He's Just Not That Into You which I love. Maybe I'll watch it again tonight and get even more stuff done! As usual, Mom and Dad have pitched in and did it for me helped me get several of my projects done for the playroom. Mom completely did the curtains and Dad hung them. They look adorable and girly. Now I just have to play around with them so I can get them tied the way I want them. They're straight curtains with ribbons all the way down so you can tie them up at different heights - hard to explain- I'll post pics when the christmas tree is out of there! And mom came over and helped me with the memory board. It also looks fantastic- I am so excited to see everything put together. I still need to get the new storage furniture put together, the decorative letters altered, the picture frames decorated, the toys organized, the dollhouse put together, my clothesline for her pictures decorated and hung up....lots to do- and that's not all of it! When I initially started I was going to have this all done and ready for her to wake up to on Christmas morning but that is just not going to work out. There is WAY too much to put up at the last minute and the curtains and wall decoration is already up so oh well! She has so many presents that she won't even be paying attention to the room. I'll have it all done I think- it just might get decorated as I go instead of all at once. :)
I love the Christmas holiday- this season has seemed short and like it just caught me by surprise- I think this is the first time that classes have really interfered with normal life. Guess I'd better get used to that, huh? I do love wrapping presents though, and making candy and having the tree and lights up. I think I'll try and take Anna out looking at lights again a couple times this week- she gets so excited to see them. I have more candy to make and groceries to buy so we can have family over on Christmas Eve. And no studying for a while! I'm already enjoying my break. :)
I am also already working on getting the house all organized and hopefully instilling some better habits/routines/etc so that when I start classes and clinicals in January, the transition will be a little smoother. I will be gone 3 days a week- all day - so gotta make some changes! I'm so thankful for all the help I have with Anna- everyone in the family has been helping me out so much this last semester. I don't know what people with no family in town even do.
Well, off to some internet browsing and sitting for a while until I get up and get busy on the next thing on the list!

Christmas Pictures

I have always been a little bit of a nutso about getting Anna's pictures taken ... well pretty much all the time. This Christmas all credit for the taking of the pictures goes to my mom- all my brain power was used up finishing my finals. (that's another post- which I will try and get around to as I really want to get back to blogging on a normal schedule!) Mom got the outfit and made the appointment so thanks Mom! I guess the only thing I can take credit for is the bow and Adam hates it so.... Anyhow. I thought several of the pictures turned out very well though- you never know with a 3 year old what you're going to end up with! Esp when they announce that they HATE getting their picture taken! ha! silly girl- she later told me she in fact LOVES getting her picture taken and would sing and dance for us so we could get good pictures. :) She DID in fact sing and dance- and we did get some cute shots. We also got some of those photos that are so "your child" that it makes you laugh just to look at them. Like this....

We only printed out four of the 72 that I now have on cd (yeah we fell victim to the "for only this much more you can have xyz" scam they got going on over there...). We printed the first one on this post and we also printed this one.

This is not one that we printed but it is one that I really like of her. Just a cute face she makes all the time. Usually right before she says something that will make me laugh hysterically at her.

I think this one was taken when it was becoming quickly apparent that we might have reached the end of her patience with us. ;)

This is another one we printed. Feel free to beg for a copy.

Another one of her dancing- I believe it was the hula dance. Of course if you know us at all, then you know that Aunt Julie is definitely having an influence of this little girl! The hula! Honestly!

The photographer wanted Anna to sit in a pretty, feminine, white wicker chair. Of course, she didn't want to sit in this chair- she wanted to sit in the weird blue office looking chair. We had to bribe her (no I am not ashamed) with a turn in the blue chair if she would sit in the white one first. Here's the response we got.....in case you don't know how to interpret Anna's faces- this one means... "well ok... I'll sit in the chair but only on my terms and I'm gonna be as ornery as possible about it!"

When she finally got to sit in her blue chair this is the first thing she did....VERY ladylike I think!

Then she bounced up and down on it for several minutes.

The final shot is my favorite- and no, she is not smacking herself in the face like the dummy photographer thought maybe she was doing (Sigh). She is laughing. And this picture looks so much like my sweet, silly girl that I would have had to purchase this one no matter how much it was!

Christmas!

Ok I have no idea how to rearrange all these pictures- if anyone else does please let me know! They are in all kinds of crazy order but you'll get the general idea. :)

We have started our Christmas decorating this week. Anna is so excited- she was fun last year for sure but this year she really is ready for those presents. ha! And this year Adam actually went and got Christmas lights for the outside of the house! That is all kinds of weird if you know him. Only for the love of a little girl I guess! He had big plans but had some troubles with the brick clips (or something like that) so just did the icicle lights on the garage side of the house. He said that's the only side Anna sees :) They do look very nice though and she sure loves them being up. I have promised her several car trips a week before bedtime to look at Christmas lights. Guess I should go ahead and do that....

Anna "helping" Uncle Brad put up Christmas lights

Probably saying some choice words when I took this :)

Watching the action

In addition to the lights outside, we've been at work on the inside as well. I haven't gotten everything done yet so I guess we'll see how much more I get to. Seeing as how I have 4 finals in the next two weeks, well, we'll just see, won't we! I have never succeeded in finding Anna a Christmas stocking that really "looks like her" which as all loyal readers of this blog (all 2) know, I'm super big on things having meaning and the stocking is no exception to this rule. So this year, I bought a plain ole white one and let Anna have at it with her favorite glitter glue. At least for a few years, that will be one of her traditions - decorating her own stocking. Here's a picture of her standing in front of it. There's a picture of the actual stocking further down... I'd love to have them all prettily lined up next to each other but apparently blogspot doesn't agree with me on the importance of that. Are you picking up on my irritation?

Proud of her stocking

Anna was ummmm.... well let's say a whirlwind.... of tree decorating. She was grabbing ornaments so fast and most of the time I had no idea where she or the ornaments were at. She just couldn't stand to wait until mommy had a chance to get things organized or put the hangers on. I must admit to doing a wee bit of "redecorating" after she was asleep.  In the end she had fun and she loves the tree and the lights and I'm sure the excitement will only escalate as presents get wrapped and put under the tree. And then probably rewrapped after she realizes she can peek. And then probably rewrapped again and put up somewhere else when she continues to unwrap them. Hey what's Christmas without a little bit of snooping? :)

Thanks so much to Nana and Papa for the beautiful Christmas tree for Anna- it's SO much prettier than our old sad small one.

This is one of the faces we got a lot of when we tried to take pictures of her decorating

This is the other face we got a lot of this year. silly girl

With Daddy, putting on the star

Really quick posting of funny Anna video

Like that title? :)

Adam recorded a version of a song he used to sing with his mom and sister all the time for Anna to listen to. I think Nana actually sings this song to her sometimes too. Something about little fishes and they swam and they swam right over that dam... probably loses something without the actual music and lyrics... Anyways, she LOVES it- I tried to catch the funny dancing she does to the song. Enjoy the silly girl....
